Joint visit of Ms.Christine Weigand, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan and Ms.Yazdursun Gurbannazarova, Ombudsperson of Turkmenistan to the Ahal velayat Rehabilitation Educational and Training Complex

Ashgabat, 11 June – On 10 June 2021, Ms.Yazdursun Gurbannazarova, Ombudsperson of Turkmenistan and Ms.Christine Weigand, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan had a joint introductory visit to the Ahal velayat Rehabilitation Educational and Training Complex. They learnt about the situation of children in the Complex, opportunities created for the children with disabilities, informed about implementation and realization of child rights in Turkmenistan, regulations of Convention on the Rights of the Child and national legislation. This visit was conducted within the framework of Work plan for 2021 between UNICEF Turkmenistan and Office of Ombudsman and in the framework of preparation of the alternative report to the Committee on Child Rights. Its purpose was to learn about the support provided as well as the challenges faced in providing services for children with disabilities.
During the visit Ombudsperson of Turkmenistan and UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan got acquainted with implementation of curriculums for every group of children with disabilities, lessons which are taught by educators for children in different groups, rehabilitation and treatment opportunities. The complex is fully equipped to provide education and rehabilitation of children, considering various types of children with disabilities.
Within the visit, the staff of the complex expressed their sincere gratitude to the Esteemed President of Turkmenistan for the construction and putting into operation of the modern complex for children with disabilities, teachers and educators working here.
UNICEF in Turkmenistan has been working with the Ministry of Education as well as other partners for many years in the area of early intervention and rehabilitation. In the new 5-year programme of cooperation, this area of work remains a priority. Since the creation of the Office of the Ombudsperson, UNICEF has supported its work and progressively expanded collaboration with a special focus on child rights.
