Green School Programme: Methodological Guides on Climate Change for Teachers

Schoolchildren in Turkmenistan walk along a tree-lined school path during an environmental activity, with one student carrying a shovel and others wearing aprons as they take part in keeping their school grounds clean and green.

About

This series of five methodological guides helps teachers in Turkmenistan’s general education schools build climate change into the subjects they already teach. Climate change education is an integral component of the Green School Programme, jointly implemented by UNICEF and the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, and these guides are a key tool for bringing it into everyday teaching. The guides cover Nature Studies, Agricultural Labor, Basic Life Skills, Geography and Ecology, so students meet climate change from primary school through to the final grades. Each guide adds topics on climate change, the environment and energy to the existing curriculum, with a focus on adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction. All five use an interactive, student-centred approach in which the teacher guides discovery rather than simply presenting material. Lessons rely on group work, discussion, role play, experiments and practical tasks, supported by illustrations and handouts. The aim goes beyond knowledge: students should leave with the skills and everyday habits that make them responsible, climate-aware and safety-conscious citizens.
