Highlights

This report on “Strengthening gender inclusive WASH systems in Tanzania: A landscape assessment” provides a timely and compelling pathway for advancing gender-transformative water, sanitation, and hygiene systems in Tanzania. Drawing on national evidence and experience from the Government of the Netherlands-funded ASWA III Programme in Tanzania, with a focus on Songwe, it highlights encouraging progress, particularly in menstrual health and hygiene, while identifying persistent gaps in women’s leadership, inclusive financing, and the use of disaggregated data. The report calls for coordinated action to embed gender equality, disability, and social inclusion across WASH policies, institutions, budgets, and service delivery. UNICEF remains committed to working with the Government of Tanzania, communities, and development partners to translate these findings into sustainable, climate-resilient, and inclusive WASH solutions that uphold dignity, strengthen resilience, and leave no one behind.
