ASUNCIÓN, September 15, 2021. Technicians of the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) of the Ministry of Public Health & Social Welfare (MSPBS) participated in the virtual course on the functioning of solar refrigerators for COVID-19 vaccine storage, organized by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) as part of the technical cooperation of the Government of Japan to strengthen Paraguay's cold chain.

The course was inaugurated by Sakura Shibayama, in charge of technical cooperation of the Japanese Embassy in Asunción; Rigoberto Astorga, UNICEF Programme Manager in Paraguay; and Luis Cousirat, PAI Head of Department.

Ms. Shibayama underscored that after this training the units will be installed in locations of the Chaco, and that the Japanese people look forward to helping as many Paraguayans as possible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Mr. Astorga pointed out that this is the first training course on the use and management of solar refrigeration equipment, intended for areas that can use this natural resource. He also highlighted the importance of the training to install capacity for the sustainable use of these cutting-edge units.

The course was taught by Peruvian experts and analyzed the cold chain and the installation, operation, management and preventive maintenance of the refrigeration equipment with solar panels.

The training is part of the seven combined solar refrigerator-freezer units delivered by UNICEF and Japan to the MSPBS to build the COVID-19 vaccine storage capacity.

The units will be installed in locations of the Chaco such as Fuerte Olimpo, Bahía Negra, Mariscal Estigarribia and Tte. Manuel Irala Fernández.

Each of these combined units equipment stores 200,000 doses, thereby ensuring the storage of 1,400,000 biologicals in remote locations.

The delivery of the equipment is part of the non-reimbursable financial cooperation of the Government of Japan to the Republic of Paraguay worth US$ 2,391,000 to strengthen the cold chain for COVID-19 vaccine storage. The aid seeks to benefit approximately 1,500,000 people.

The cooperation seeks to build the capacity of the National Immunization Program of the MSPBS.

This activity is part of the technical support provided by UNICEF to the health response of the Government of Paraguay to the COVID-19 pandemic.
