How much of what children eat is really their choice?
Children grow up surrounded by food advertising: on their phones, in shops, on billboards and in and around schools. When ultra-processed food and sugary drinks are constantly visible and promoted, they can easily become the familiar and obvious choice. What if the spaces constantly promoting unhealthy food showed them healthier options instead?
A group of students from ‘Vancho Prke’ primary school in Shtip decided to turn that idea into a social media challenge.
They looked for advertising for ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks in and around their school and gave it a simple makeover. Using fresh fruit and vegetables, they covered the advertised products, took a photo of their recreated version and shared it online, inviting friends to do the same.
The challenge invites children and young people to look critically at the messages surrounding them and imagine a different food advertising environment, one where healthier choices are more visible, available and easier to make.
Now it’s your turn!
🍎 Find it: Spot an advertisement for ultra-processed food or sugary drinks in or around your school, or a shelf in the local store filled with these products.
🥕 Refresh it: Use a fruit or vegetable to cover the product and reimagine what the ad could look like. Or simply show your healthier choice instead!
📸 Photograph it: Take a photo of your refreshed version.
📲 Share it: Post your photo on social media using the hashtag #ОсвежиГоИзборот and challenge a friend to do the same.
Let’s refresh what children see around them and create food environments in schools that protect children and support healthy choices.
