PODGORICA, 12 APRIL 2020 – As part of the Institute of Public Health’s #StayAtHome campaign, preschool teachers across the country have joined the #PlayAtHome action launched by UNICEF, the Association “Parents” and the Ministry of Education. They have started posting videos of various games with preschoolers on their social networks using the hashtag #PlayAtHome, tagging UNICEF Montenegro, the Ministry of Education and the Association “Parents” (roditelji.me).
“By using these short videos, we wanted to help children and, consequently, their parents and to show them that there are a vast number of games and activities that can be devised at home to allow the child to be physically active, which is of great importance for his/her proper psychosocial development. We also wanted to show parents how to stimulate curiosity and creativity, develop independence, and use the time properly to facilitate the development of their child into a self-responsible and self-aware person,” explains Milodarka Patkovic, a preschool teacher from the ‘Ljubica Popovic’ kindergarten in Podgorica.
She is the author of two videos for children aged 3–6. The videos feature games that encourage physical activity in children, contribute to the development of a competitive spirit, teach them how to follow and respect the rules of the game and wait their turn.
“There is a saying about adults who can’t play – they never come to know the joy of living. Check it out!” says Patkovic.
In difficult times, children need the love and attention of adults. The #PlayAtHome action is an invitation for all parents to devote some extra time and attention to their children and to allow them to play and relax. The action will last for the duration of the social distancing measures and the videos showing various types of games with children will be posted on the social networks of UNICEF Montenegro, the Association “Parents” and the Ministry of Education.
“Therefore, we invite all preschool teachers and parents to use social networks to send us short videos of the various games they play with their children, to inspire one another and make preschoolers’ stay at home a positive learning experience through play and fun,” says Milica Lekic, Public Relations Advisor at the Ministry of Education.
Children can react to stress in a variety of ways, including increased irritability, withdrawal, anger or tension, bedwetting, etc. By engaging in open discussion and play, every parent can help his/her child cope with stress during the coronavirus pandemic.
Therefore, our message to all parents and children is: Let’s play at home!
