A Journey of Hope: Little Alfred’s Triumph Over Severe Acute Malnutrition
How Community Support and UNICEF’s Efforts Transformed a Life in Gbarpolu County
In the heart of Liberia, within the walls of the Chief Jallah Lone Hospital, a young boy named Alfred Emmanuel, affectionately known as Emmanuel Daffa, became a beacon of hope for many. His journey, marked by the struggle against Severe Acute Malnutrition, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of dedicated care.
Alfred’s story began in the New Bopolu Community of Bopolu City, Gbarpolu County, where his caregiver, Mr. Daffa Z. Kamara, took on the role of a guardian when Alfred was just 14 days old. Mr. Kamara, a 56-year-old resident, noticed the infant’s declining health and, with his wife, made the life-saving decision to seek help from the UNICEF-supported malnutrition feeding center at the Chief Jallah Lone Health Center.
Alfred’s condition was classified as Severe Acute Malnutrition, and he was admitted to the Special Nutrition-Care Unit. Weighing only 4.5kg, with a height of 63.2 cm, a Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) of 11.2cm, and a Z-Score of less than -4.0, his situation was dire. For 44 days, Alfred fought for his life, facing multiple relapses. Yet, the unwavering dedication of the caregivers and Special Nutrition-Care Unit staff, along with Mr. Kamara and his wife’s constant presence, provided the nurturing environment Alfred needed to recover.
UNICEF’s intervention with Fortified 75 and 100, Plumpy’nut, and other vital supplies proved to be a lifeline for Alfred and many children like him. Upon his discharge, Alfred’s weight had increased to 6.4kg, and his Z-Score improved to -1. The continued provision of Plumpy’nut over a three-month period played a crucial role in boosting his growth and immunity.
Today, Alfred is a vibrant 2-year-old, full of strength and health. The transformation is a source of immense pride for Mr. Kamara and his wife, who eagerly share their story of hope and perseverance.
The Kamara family’s livelihood comes from the land and the local tradition of palm wine trading, which has sustained them for five years. However, Mr. Kamara recognizes that many children in Gbarpolu suffer from malnutrition, often without the necessary support due to their caregivers’ inability to stay at the hospital. He stresses the importance of raising awareness about malnutrition and its impact on children and the community.
In a heartfelt expression of gratitude, Mr. Kamara commends the USAID and UNICEF for their continued support of malnourished children in Gbarpolu County and extends his appreciation to the Special Nutrition-Care Unit staff at Chief Jallah Lone for their professional care and love shown to Alfred during his admission.
