Highlights
This report, Antecedents, Accidents and Impacts: UXO Research in Lao PDR, presents comprehensive evidence on the human, social and economic impacts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) accidents across affected children and communities in Lao PDR. The study analyzes patterns and underlying risk factors contributing to UXO incidents, including behavioral, environmental and socio-economic antecedents, while documenting the long-term consequences faced by survivors, families and communities.
The research provides critical insights into who is most at risk, how accidents occur, and the multidimensional impacts of UXO contamination on livelihoods, education, health and child wellbeing. Findings contribute to strengthening evidence-based programming for UXO risk education, victim assistance, and broader prevention efforts, supporting national priorities toward reducing accidents and protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children and rural communities.
The report was developed through a collaborative partnership among government institutions, development partners and technical organizations working in the UXO sector. UNICEF Lao PDR provided technical and financial support to the research and publication, contributing to strengthened child-sensitive and evidence-driven approaches to UXO risk reduction and protection of affected communities.
