Highlights

Digital marketing of unhealthy food and drinks influences children and adolescents’ food choices, eating habits, and diets. In the digital environment, marketing techniques have been significantly expanding - including product placement, use of influencers, and geolocators - and currently know no geographical boundaries.

Unfortunately, in Latin America and the Caribbean, a lack of regulation around the digital environment has increased the use of marketing techniques that target directly children and adolescents, and have a negative impact on their rights to adequate nutrition, health and information.

In response, UNICEF's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean is publishing a report and policy brief based on an analysis of the latest evidence, including two UNICEF studies conducted in Mexico and Argentina. In addition, the policy brief presents evidence-based policy recommendations that advocate for policies that regulate the digital marketing of unhealthy food and beverages to children and adolescents in the region.
