What is the International Volunteer Day?
International Volunteer Day (IVD) is marked and supported by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program. On this day, organizations around the world celebrate and recognize volunteers and their selfless dedication to their communities, and their devotion to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local and international levels.
Why celebrate the International Volunteer Day?
Volunteers across the globe work tirelessly on national and international levels to make the world we live in a better place, without waiting to get paid. They commit their time, energy, and efforts to acts of service to the needy and to the community.
Volunteers form an essential part of the world’s mission to eradicate poverty, disease, hunger, illiteracy, diseases, climate change, and achievement of the SDGs.
Why volunteer?
Simply put, when we volunteer not only we learn to selflessly build our communities, but we leave a positive impact for generations to come.
Volunteerism has benefits not only on the communities, but on individuals too:
- Gaining new skills that will help in the professional life
- Giving back to the community gives a sense of purpose and accomplishment
- Volunteering boosts self-esteem
- Networking and exposure
- Increased chances of employment after volunteering
In addition to these benefits, The Hussein Bin Abdullah Volunteer Award has been announced and will be awarded to the best volunteers and initiatives.
