Government of the Republic of Korea contributes US$600,000 to UNICEF for the Makani programme

AMMAN, 24 September 2018: The Government of the Republic of Korea announced today a new contribution of US$600,000 to support the implementation of Makani activities by UNICEF Jordan. The announcement was made during an event attended by Korean Ambassador H.E Lee Bom-yon and UNICEF’s Representative Robert Jenkins on Monday.

Given the pressing needs of children in Jordan, UNICEF developed a new approach to its interventions on child protection, youth and adolescents, and education called the Makani (my space in Arabic) model, implemented since 2013. Makani is a comprehensive approach to service provision linking interventions in education – learning support services; community-based child protection, including early childhood development; adolescent and youth participation- life skills and innovation labs.

The new contribution will support UNICEF in providing vulnerable children with a comprehensive set of services through its network of 150 centres across Jordan. In 2018, the Makani programme is targeting 109,000 children in refugee camps and in vulnerable areas in host communities. Of the overall target, over 2,280 Syrian refugee children will access Makani services thanks to the support received from the Republic of Korea.

“UNICEF is extremely grateful for the generous contribution of the Korean government. We have witnessed a continued commitment from Korea to support Syrian refugee children, especially vulnerable girls and women. The Government and People of Korea supported us throughout the years, in reaching thousands of children with improved access to health services, WASH, and inclusive quality education,” said the UNICEF Jordan Representative Robert Jenkins. “We continue working hard to ensure that all children in Jordan, especially those who were uprooted, are receiving quality education and essential child protection services they surely deserve,” he added.

The Government and people of the Republic of Korea have supported UNICEF Jordan since 2014, with a total of US$ 9.3 million in contributions, making it possible to reach thousands of the most vulnerable children in Jordan.
