Highlights

Overweight and obesity are increasingly pressing public health concerns in Indonesia, adding to the country's longstanding issues of undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, collectively referred to as the "triple burden of malnutrition." Individuals affected by overweight and obesity face significantly higher risks of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and certain types of cancer, and of various psycho-social issues.

To respond to these challenges, UNICEF conducted a comprehensive Landscape Analysis of Overweight and Obesity in Indonesia, providing an in-depth overview of trends, risk factors, and prevalence among children, adolescents, and adults, while highlighting variations by gender and region. The study also reviews existing policies and programmes, political commitment, and evidence gaps, offering policy and programmatic recommendations developed in collaboration with government and other stakeholders. A Summary Brief for Policymakers synthesizes these findings, delivering actionable insights to guide more effective interventions and strengthen Indonesia’s public health response.

Additionally, a Summary of Key Findings includes new data from the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (Survei Kesehatan Indonesia, SKI), providing an updated, concise snapshot of the current situation and recommendations for addressing overweight, obesity, and associated health risks.
