Madhuri Dixit is regarded as the most loved and admired heroines of all times in the Indian film industry. She is as well-known for the variety of movies that she’s worked in practically ruled the world of Bollywood and the hearts of millions of cine-goers – often overshadowing the male actors.
Today, as a mother-of-two, Madhuri Dixit still wins hearts of millions of Indian viewers through her presence as judge in an immensely popular dance reality show on television.
Madhuri Dixit was appointed UNICEF Celebrity Advocate for child rights in India in 2014. Dixit is regarded as an iconic personality, woman and mother. In this powerful capacity and considering her immense popularity across community and class divides In India, she is aptly suited for spreading the message of fundamental rights of children.
Madhuri Dixit has been supporting UNICEF to advocate for the rights of children, especially with regards to the prevention of child labour and child trafficking. Some of her key public service announcements, on these issues, are being used extensively as communication material for educating communities across India.
“Every child has the basic right to proper nutrition, upbringing and quality education. I feel very strongly about this and want to work towards creating awareness of these issues amongst people so that children in our country get what is their very basic right. I am glad that I can use my voice through this platform to make a difference in the lives of these children.”
Dixit visited Madhya Pradesh in 2015 to launch a campaign called ‘Mamta Abhiyan’, along with the Chief Minister of MP, Shivraj Singh Chauhan. Mamta Abhiyan focuses on saving the lives of newborn children and their mothers in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
The idea behind the campaign was to inform and educate communities on the “twelve cost effective and simple behaviours” that could play a path breaking role in bringing down neonatal and maternal mortality rates in the State. Madhuri Dixit presence on this occasion helped us reach out to people and convey the message strongly and effectively.
With the help of our programs and initiatives, Madhuri Dixit is stressing on the importance of giving love, quality education care and respect to all children and their mothers. Through her work on these issues, she will restate the criticality of every stage of development in the life cycle of a child.
Madhuri Dixit’s immense popularity across ages, gender and geography makes her just the right voice to raise concerns on these issues. She has brought in tremendous amounts of credibility and energy to our communications on child rights as well as our efforts on bringing a difference to the life of every child.
In the coming years, she will lend her voice to various UNICEF-supported programs across the country, advocating the cause of child rights with high-level government officials, our NGO partners and the public. She will also play an active role in our fundraising and advocacy events related to the issue.
