Highlights

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Its economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, but it faces challenges such as frequent natural disasters, including the 2010 earthquake, which killed over 160,000 people and left millions without a home – and environmental degradation. Disasters have often damaged or destroyed the little infrastructure Haiti has. Recovery is often slow.

The significant social challenges Haiti faces include widespread poverty and unemployment, limited access to education and health care, and low quality and quantity of services. There are also issues related to violence perpetrated by armed groups and insecurity in urban areas, especially in the capital, Port-au-Prince. In recent years, Haiti has faced increasing political turmoil, armed violence and a deteriorating security situation.
