Bissau (Guinea-Bissau), 20 de March, 2024 – France and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) signed a partnership to support the Ministry of National Education, of Guinea Bissau with a project valued at four million euros for the rehabilitation of school and sports infrastructure in the capital Bissau, improving children and adolescents' access to recreational and sports activities spaces, and updating the physical education curriculum.

To strengthen the quality of physical education teaching in Guinea-Bissau, UNICEF, with funding from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), will provide technical assistance to the National Institute of Educational Development. Thus, the three-year project will benefit not only the children attending these educational establishments and sports facilities but also the broader school community – students and teachers – by consolidating and updating the physical education curriculum.

The project will promote the use of sports and physical activities to give children and adolescents in Guinea-Bissau an opportunity to reach their full potential, with programs that promote personal and social development, following the logic of "Sport for Development," adopted by UNICEF in several countries. UNICEF's experience demonstrates that sport is an effective and inclusive tool to help children develop pedagogical, social, and leadership skills, improve their health and well-being, and protect their right to play.

It also envisages rehabilitation work at the Agostinho Neto High School, at the sports facilities of the "Campo Rádio," which also serves students from the Kwame Nkrumah High School, Rui Barcelo da Cunha High School, and Salvador Allende Primary School, and in part of the building of the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education, and Scientific Research.

UNICEF and AFD believe that this support to the Bissau-Guinean authorities will boost the education sector, aiming to protect, preserve, and promote every child's right to quality education.
