Children in public schools are usually disconnected from school during the summer holidays. This year, though, children of Minya and Fayoum had a different experience that brought them back to school: summer camps on the environment and climate change.

Through UNICEF's WASH program, these camps were implemented in schools in Minya and Fayoum governorates in Upper Egypt in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Technical Education and the two water companies in the governorates.

The camps’ objective is to raise children awareness on health and environmental issues through interactive activities. This year – in conjunction with Egypt's hosting of the Climate Summit (COP27) in November 2022 –  climate change has been added as one of the main themes of activities. Other themes included hand washing, water and sanitation conservation, personal and public hygiene.

In the summer of 2022, 20 employees of the water company as well as 60 teachers in 30 schools were trained by UNICEF to implement these summer camps within 70 schools in Fayoum and Minya, benefiting nearly 30,000 children in primary school. In this photo essay, we share with you glimpses of the children’s activities.

While caring for the planted seedlings, we asked Hana about her favorite plant, and she said it was the sunflower: Fayoum’s signature flower.
