An Egyptian youth team has taken centre stage on the global innovation map, winning the prestigious imaGen Ventures Youth Challenge with their groundbreaking agricultural solution, Bioteel.
Their idea: replace harmful chemical pesticides and fertilizers with sustainable, eco-friendly, bio-based alternatives.
Their mission: revolutionize farming and protect our planet.
Backed by UNICEF and supported by a coalition of partners, the team’s win is more than a trophy—it's a powerful statement on the role of youth in shaping a more sustainable world.
Cultivating Innovation: The imaGen Ventures
Launched in 2020, the imaGen Ventures Youth Challenge has become a springboard for youth-led innovation in Egypt. Implemented by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Environment, UNDP, Plan International, the Scouts, iSpark, and supported by Accenture, the Swiss Development Cooperation, and the embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the programme encourages young changemakers to tackle pressing social and environmental issues through entrepreneurship.
Part of Egypt’s national youth programme “Meshwary,” imaGen Ventures provides mentorship, training bootcamps, and funding, nurturing bold ideas and guiding them from vision to action.
A Vision for Greener Agriculture
One of the programme’s most inspiring success stories, Bioteel, addresses a global crisis: over 34 per cent of agricultural land worldwide is degraded by human activity, much of it linked to chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
Bioteel offers a powerful alternative. Using natural microorganisms and organic compounds, their biofertilizers and biopesticides help restore soil health, protect pollinators, and boost crop resilience. Unlike conventional chemicals, Bioteel’s products support biodiversity, improve water quality, and combat pest resistance, key ingredients for sustainable farming.
“Our goal is to heal the earth while feeding our communities,” said one team member. “We believe sustainability and productivity can go hand in hand.”
Beyond the Win: Empowering Young Changemakers
The Bioteel team’s journey is far from over. Scaling up production, changing farmer mindsets, and securing funding remain key challenges. Many agricultural communities are deeply reliant on chemical solutions, and transitioning requires not just better products, but awareness, training, and trust.
UNICEF, alongside its partners, continues to play a critical role in helping these innovators navigate these hurdles, offering global exposure, technical support, and pathways to funding.
With Accenture’s support, the imaGen Ventures programme aims to engage 69,000 youth by 2027, with at least 347 social entrepreneurs launching their ventures, turning ideas into enterprises that serve both people and the planet.
A Future of Sustainable Agriculture
Bioteel’s vision is bold: an Egypt, and a world, where agriculture works in harmony with nature, not against it. Through cleaner inputs, smarter practices, and youth-led innovation, the start-up is paving the way for climate-smart farming that nourishes both soil and society.
As Egyptian youth rise as changemakers, UNICEF remains steadfast in its support, through programmes like the imaGen Ventures Youth Challenge, ensuring young people have the skills, platforms, and confidence to lead.
Because they’re not just dreaming of a better world.
They’re building it.
