Highlights

The UNICEF Refugee Response Office’s 2024 Annual Report presents to the results of UNICEF’s work in of support Ukrainian refugee children and families in Poland three years after the escalation of war in Ukraine. With nearly one million refugees registered – 37% of them children – Poland remains home to one of Europe’s largest refugee populations. While many have found safety and are rebuilding their lives with support from national and local administration as well as civil society organizations and international partners such as UNICEF, challenges in education, protection, mental health, and long-term social inclusion persist. UNICEF has been and will continue working to make sure every refugee child is safe, included and thriving.

The report also covers UNICEF’s programmatic shifts in 2024 in recognition of the persistent and evolving needs of refugee families. The situation requires a medium-term approach, prioritizing sustainable integration and social inclusion.

Key results achieved by working together with our partners include supporting mandatory school enrollment, expanding language learning programs, strengthening mental health services, and improving child protection systems. Despite much progress barriers remain, particularly for children with disabilities, children deprived of parental care or at risk of family separation, and for refugee adolescents and youth.

Looking ahead, UNICEF will continue working with the Polish government and partners to enhance education, mental health, and social inclusion. By strengthening national systems, UNICEF aims to create lasting opportunities for every child.
