Hungarian Ministry of Interior and UNICEF expand partnership to continue support for refugees from Ukraine
The Memorandum of Understanding signed by UNICEF and the Hungarian Ministry of Interior will be followed by a detailed workplan focusing on child protection, child welfare, education, anti-trafficking and health related services for refugee children

BUDAPEST, 26 September 2023 – UNICEF Refugee Response Office in Hungary and the Ministry of Interior of Hungary today committed to further expanding their partnership to provide access to essential services for refugee children and families from Ukraine.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed by Mátyás Hegyaljai, Deputy State Secretary of the Hungarian Ministry of Interior and Pilar Gonzalez Rams, Emergency Coordinator for UNICEF Refugee Response Office, Hungary, commits to supporting social inclusion, providing education, health services and specialized child protection and child welfare services, including temporary care for children and prevention of human trafficking.
“The Memorandum of Understanding we mutually signed today gives a new impetus to the traditionally good cooperation between the Government of Hungary and UNICEF. From now on our joint mission will be reaching out to all children and families with the aim of providing services that best suits their circumstances,” said Deputy State Secretary Mátyás Hegyaljai.
“UNICEF focuses on strengthening national and local capacities to provide quality services to refugees and host communities. Through our partnerships with national and local governments, civil society, and faith-based organizations, we are helping to ensure children are safe, protected and have access to education and health care,” said Pilar Gonzalez Rams, Emergency Coordinator for UNICEF Refugee Response Office, Hungary. “UNICEF stands ready to support Hungary in its continued commitment to deliver results for children.”
UNICEF’s Emergency Response Office in Hungary was established in March of 2022 to assist the government and civil society partners in addressing the needs of refugees arriving from Ukraine. In October 2022 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary.
Since the beginning of the response, more than 40,000 refugees, of whom 85 per cent are women and children, have been reached with essential services through UNICEF-supported programmes in Hungary.
