Every year, International Youth Day celebrates the energy, innovation, and commitment of young people around the world. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), young people are mobilizing to help eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives and prospects of Congolese children, adolescents, and youth.

By engaging in volunteer activities or becoming UNICEF Young Champions, young Congolese are proving to be essential actors of social change, making volunteering an indispensable tool for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

With nearly 70% of the Congolese population under 24 years old, this dynamic youth is an essential pillar of the country’s positive transformation. Young people bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to global challenges through their roles as innovators and community leaders.

“Working with young people is an effective partnership. We acquire skills that prepare us for the job market while contributing to positive change in our communities,” explains Eutyche Kubali, 20 years old.

In partnership with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, the Young Champions initiative was launched in 2023 to integrate young people into UNICEF, offering them professional development opportunities while supporting them as agents of change and peace in their communities.

In Lubumbashi, Merveille Ntanga, a medical student, works to improve children's health by raising parents' awareness of vaccination. She also participates in campaigns to reduce the number of unvaccinated children.

“Every action, no matter how small, can make a big difference; our energy has the power to transform the world,” she affirms. Merveille demonstrates how young people can have a significant impact on public health and community well-being.

During the first edition of the Young Champions programme in 2023, 40 young people aged 18 to 35 joined UNICEF offices for three months. For the second edition in 2024, the engagement period was extended to six months, with a total of 28 Young Champions supporting the implementation of UNICEF's mandate.

In the Tanganyika province, Jephte Kibondo, an agricultural engineer, is passionate about environmental protection. He participates in projects such as the "Reforested City" programme to combat climate change and promote social cohesion.

“It is very important to work with young people because they are engaged, motivated, and determined,” explains Jephte. His work highlights how young people can lead crucial environmental initiatives for the sustainability of their region.

The Young Champions have become true advocates of UNICEF's programme. They have lobbied at various levels for more inclusivity and the expansion of the programme worldwide. They have also successfully encouraged girls, as well as displaced and vulnerable youth, to join the programme.

In Kisangani, Déborah Lukusa is dedicated to involving young people and adolescents in UNICEF activities. “Working with young people is essential for building a sustainable, inclusive, and dynamic society,” she says.

At 23 years old, Déborah is convinced that the current generation has the power to change the world for the better. “We are the generation that can and will change the world for the better. Let’s get involved, stay active, and continue to inspire those who follow us,” concludes Déborah.

The actions of these Young Champions perfectly illustrate the positive and transformative impact that youth can have in changing the world. Their commitment shows that change is not only possible but already underway, thanks to their determination and passion.
