SAN JOSÉ, 20 December 2022– UNICEF announced Brisa Hennessy as its first National Ambassador in Costa Rica. The appointment marked in December to celebrate UNICEF'S 76th anniversary. Brisa is now the first National Ambassador UNICEF named in Costa Rica.

At 23 years old, Brisa is a successful athlete ranked #5 on the World Surf League Championship Tour. She made history representing Costa Rica for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where she was best ranked competitor from a hispanic country and top 5 worldwide.

"It’s an absolute honor to work with UNICEF and their incredible team. I have always been so passionate about bringing awareness to Children’s rights and to have that opportunity especially in my home of Costa Rica is very special to me. I hope to make big changes together and provide a safe, happy and nurturing environment for future generations, because children are our future", said Brisa Hennessy.

In her role as UNICEF Ambassador in Costa Rica, the surf star will use her global platform to help raise awareness of children’s rights, such as lack of nutrition, girls empowerment, education, safe places to play and learn, climate change, poverty and the impact sports to prevent violence.

"We are delighted to welcome Brisa to the UNICEF family during our anniversary month when we celebrate 76 years of UNICEF. We are committed to ensure the protection and the wellbeing of all children, especially the most disadvantaged children, victims of extreme poverty, disasters, all forms of violence and those with disabilities. We know that Brisa as a young woman will use her passion and dedication to defend the rights of children and young people in Costa Rica and everywhere", said Patricia Portela de Souza, UNICEF Representative in Costa Rica.

UNICEF announced that Brisa will participate in various activities to promote children's rights in 2023 in Costa Rica, and anticipates that it will include a surf camp for children and adolescents in greatest needs.

Brisa was born in San José and grew up in Matapalo, Osa Peninsula, where her parents, both good surfers, ran a surf school. For the first nine years of her life, Hennessy grew up near the ocean and the rainforest, so she has always belonged to the sea.
