Equity, inclusion and diversity at UNICEF
Championing an equal and inclusive environment for all
Equity, inclusion and diversity are at the heart of what we do. For UNICEF, representation matters. We operate in 190 countries and territories, and our staff come from 174 countries. This wealth of backgrounds, cultures and nationalities is the driving force behind our work for every child.
Many research studies have shown that diversity is intimately correlated with innovative thinking, out-of-the-box solutions, better ideas and, ultimately, a higher performing and a healthier workforce.
Our focus on equity, inclusion and diversity is essential to promoting the wellbeing of all staff, and it is engrained through our five key values: care, respect, integrity, trust and accountability. Read more about how we are living our values
Gender equality in the workplace
UNICEF is committed to ensuring a fair, inclusive and safe work environment for all personnel, irrespective of their gender identity and sexual orientation. Moreover, as we move closer to global gender parity at UNICEF, our commitment and efforts align with the UN Secretary-General’s System-Wide Strategy on Gender Parity. To ensure sustainable gender equality in the workplace, have several tools, resources, policies and initiatives in place.
In 2018, UNICEF attained the second level of EDGE Certification, EDGE Move, becoming the first United Nations organization to earn the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality.
The EDGE (Economic Dividends for Gender Equality) Certification process defined success following four areas of analysis: gender balance at all levels; gender pay gap; policies and practices to ensure equitable career opportunities for everyone; and staff perception in terms of career development opportunities and an inclusive culture. After being benchmarked against peer organizations and the EDGE global standard, we were ranked among the top 11 percent of all EDGE-certified organizations.
UNICEF is currently implementing several commitments as part of an action plan developed under the EDGE Certification process.
