On March 21, 2025, UNICEF Cameroon and the MTN Cameroon Foundation launched an innovative E-Container at Douala's Government Nursery and Primary School Bilongue. This fully equipped digital learning space, made from recycled materials, aims to empower over 1,200 pupils and 20 teachers by providing access to technology and educational resources. The initiative seeks to enhance children's numeracy and literacy skills, significantly improving their learning and teaching experiences.

Distinguished guests, including the Secretary of State for Basic Education, the Representative of UNICEF Cameroon, the CEO of MTN Cameroon, the Mayor of Douala Municipality, and the Directors of the Government Nursery and Primary School Bilongue graced the inauguration ceremony. Each speaker highlighted the importance of this initiative in promoting digital inclusion and educational excellence.

The school compound buzzed with excitement as students, teachers, and community members gathered to witness the unveiling of this transformative project. In his opening remarks, the Mayor of Douala Municipality emphasized the need to bridge the digital gap and provide children with the tools necessary to thrive in an increasingly technological world.

“Digital technology and connectivity are sources of more exchanges, more knowledge, and more skills. Living apart from these technologies because one does not have the necessary means to obtain a smartphone or a computer, or because one lives in an area that lacks internet coverage, risks excluding oneself from the world of tomorrow.”

UNICEF’s continued support in promoting access to quality education reaffirmed its commitment to the community.

“Access to technology has become as crucial as access to textbooks and classrooms. The world is evolving rapidly, and for our children to compete on a global stage, they must be equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the job market,”

Following the speeches, the ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official launch of the E-Container. Students eagerly explored the facility, interacting with computers, educational software, and online learning platforms. Their smiles and excitement underscored the immense impact this initiative would have on their academic journey.

As the event concluded, it was clear that the inauguration of the E-Container at the Government Nursery and Primary School Bilongue was more than just a ceremony—it was a step toward digital empowerment, equal opportunities, and a brighter future for generations to come.

This initiative directly supports the realization of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education (SDG 4), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). By providing access to digital education, the E-Container project helps ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The majority of children in Cameroon are excluded from the digital learning space and its array of opportunities. If not addressed, the digital divide could lead to heightened inequality and injustices for hundreds of underprivileged children in Cameroon and across the world. UNICEF calls on all partners, including the private sector, to contribute to providing educational digital opportunities for children, empowering them and fulfilling their rights.
