Dedication in action: Madam Theresia Tita, a hero for children’s education in Bamenda II
Bringing education, stability, and hope to children affected by crisis, one Temporary Learning Space (TLS) facilitator is making a lasting difference in her community.
In Mulang, Bamenda 2, a community that has become a refuge for children displaced by ongoing crises, one Temporary Learning Space (TLS) facilitator is working tirelessly to give hope, learning, and stability to the youngest residents. Madam Theresia Tita, affectionately called MaTheresa by her colleagues and students, has been teaching for approximately 25 years, and her experience and passion for education are making an extraordinary difference for children who have known disruption, displacement, and uncertainty.
Many of the children she works with have fled their original homes and now live with relatives who may be reluctant to care for them fully or unable to provide structured support. For these children, the TLS is more than a classroom, it is a safe haven, a place where they can learn, play, and regain a sense of normalcy.
Madam Theresia goes out of her way to engage these parents and relatives, advocating for the children and ensuring they attend class, complete their assignments, and remain connected to learning despite the challenges around them.
“Most of these children have faced so much disruption, some live with relatives who didn’t plan to host them. I try to talk to parents and guardians every day, helping them understand why it’s so important for these children to continue their education.”
Theresa’s commitment extends beyond the classroom. Working closely with partners in child protection and WASH, she ensures that the TLS is equipped with learning materials, hygiene supplies, and a supportive environment where children can thrive. The children themselves are inspired and engaged, often amazed by the books, stationery, and teaching tools available.
A typical day for Madam Theresia starts early. She coordinates with partners, checks on children who may have struggled to make it to class, and prepares lessons that balance academics with play and psychosocial support. Despite long hours and the emotional strain of working with children affected by trauma, she remains resolute.
The happiest moments are when a child who was once hesitant, or discouraged by circumstances, starts participating, answering questions, and showing confidence in their learning. That is what drives me every day.
Supported by the European Union Humanitarian Aid, UNICEF and implemented with partners including Green Partners Association, the Bamenda 2 TLS is a model of what committed facilitators like Madam Theresia can achieve in challenging environments.
Through these temporary spaces, children can continue learning safely, build resilience, and begin to regain the stability that is essential for their development.
Madam Theresia’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and unwavering belief in the strength of children. She reminds the community that education is not just about lessons and textbooks, it is about hope, opportunity, and a pathway to a better future.
A call to action
Education cannot wait, even in times of crisis, Government authorities, community leaders, humanitarian partners, and all stakeholders must support TLS facilitators, protect access to learning, and ensure that every child, no matter their circumstances, can reach their full potential.
Madam Theresia Tita is proof that one committed educator can change the lives of hundreds of children, nurturing not only their minds but their dreams, resilience, and hope for the future.
