Thirty years ago in 1989 world leaders made a historic commitment to the world’s children by adopting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child - an international agreement on childhood. Armenia ratified the Convention in 1992.
The Convention changed the way the world treats children. However, even after these 30 years, not every child gets to enjoy a full childhood. Still, too many childhoods are cut short.
It is up to our generation to demand that leaders from government, business and communities fulfil their commitments and take action for child rights now, once and for all. They must commit to making sure every child has every right.
Every year, to mark the adoption of the Convention, UNICEF advocates and raises awareness around the most pressing issues facing children. World Children’s Day shines a spotlight on article 12 of the CRC, which guarantees every child has the right to be heard, to participate and play a role in the civic life of their society.
This year is extra special as we mark the 30th anniversary of the CRC. In Armenia, UNICEF will hold a National Summit for Children with representative teams from all marzes – 8-9th grade girls and boys alike and Armenia’s decision makers. The objective is to highlight and celebrate refreshed commitments made by decision makers to realize child rights and showcase the work being done to include children as critical stakeholders, change agents and torchbearers of the CRC.
