The success of a society is undoubtedly measured by the way it treats people in need and in difficulty. Social policies, implemented in collaboration with local, central and/or non-profit structures, must be well-designed to respond to the challenges and needs of marginalized groups, with the aim of providing quality services to all citizens. Zinxhira Social Rise initiative is a positive model of how bringing physiotherapy services to Gjirokastra would change the daily lives of many people.

This is the story of Altin*, who has been dealing with an orthopedic injury and a chronic illness for a long time, a condition that limited him in every daily step. Despite his desire to take long walks, they were tiring, and each day was a challenge. The feeling of frustration with his physical condition often kept him isolated and demoralized, away from his peers. Altin lives in a peripheral area of Gjirokastra municipality, making it difficult for him to access services, due to geographical distance and his physical condition. To respond to these needs, under the slogan “Services to the beneficiaries”, Altin was included in the physiotherapy program, through the mobile unit. The personalized intervention by the staff of the Zinxhira Community Center, supported by the “EU4SocialCare” program, gave him the opportunity to strengthen his muscles, improve his flexibility and coordination, and learn to maintain balance while walking. Each session was a small step towards autonomy, and instructions for simple exercises at home gave him the opportunity to feel the power of physical self-management.

Over time, the changes became visible and inspiring. Long walks were no longer a challenge; fatigue was reduced and posture stabilized. But beyond the physical benefits, Altin gained something else of equal value: confidence. Confidence that he could continue his efforts, that he could be active and independent, and that free community services were a real opportunity to change his life. Every step taken with ease was a personal achievement and a sense of control over his body.

The results achieved are clear: improved mobility and stability, increased flexibility and energy to perform daily activities with ease. But most importantly, he has gained confidence and motivation to take care of his physical health and live more actively.

Altin’s story shows that physiotherapy services in Gjirokastra go beyond physical support - they are opportunities for improving quality of life, regaining autonomy and increasing engagement in the community.

This case is proof that continuous support, free services coming to the doorstep of vulnerable individuals and the creation of personalized plans can change the lives of individuals and inspire others walking the similar paths of challenges and hope!
