Witnessing Change on the Ground
A field visit in Tirana, Durres, Vora, Kurbin & Shkodra reveals how UNICEF Albania is transforming services for children and young people
On April 24, 2026, UNICEF Albania hosted eight Board Members of the UNICEF National Committee for a one-day field mission across multiple municipalities in Albania. The visit provided the Board with a clear view of how, in partnership with national and local partners, UNICEF Albania is implementing its mandate and delivering results for children and young people nationwide. National Committees remain critical partners in advancing children's rights, raising funds, and amplifying UNICEF's mission in every corner of the globe.
In one day, the Board members visited Durrës, Vora, Tirana, Valias (Kamza), Kurbin, and Shkodra to witness programs under two strategic pillars: Protect and Care (Child Guarantee) and Learning and Skilling (Youth Guarantee).
The mission reaffirmed several strategic insights that will inform ongoing dialogue with the UNICEF National Committee:
- Community-based models work. The transition from residential to community-based care is producing measurable results for at-risk children.
- Governance matters as much as services. Activating the Local Social Fund, NARU systems, and volunteer networks institutionalizes sustainable change.
- Innovation drives inclusion. Digital tools (Akelius) and mobile service delivery are reaching children and families who would otherwise go unseen.
- Youth are partners, not beneficiaries. The Youth Guarantee pilot in Shkodra demonstrates the power of youth-led advocacy in shaping policy and practice.
This field trip reenergized UNICEF's commitment to securing a future for every child in Albania. National Committee Board Members’ involvement strengthens the link between global solidarity and local relevance, turning every gift into tangible change for children and young people. UNICEF Albania thanks the delegation for their time, interest, and ongoing collaboration
