With unwavering support from municipal leaders and the backing of communities, Albania is on a path to enhance its school infrastructure and quality of education.
Mayors and Students Collaborate for a Better Future
Over the past few months, mayors from five municipalities (Korça, Dibra, Roskovec, Elbasan, Gjirokastra) met directly with students from various schools to discuss pressing school infrastructure issues and educational needs. The goal of these dialogues was to foster an equitable and transparent process for improving school infrastructure, all with the objective of providing high-quality education.
These crucial meetings were organized through the Equitable School Infrastructure initiative, a collaborative effort funded by USAID Albania and implemented by UNICEF Albania with support from the Ministry of Education and Sports. During these meetings, students passionately discussed the issues related to school infrastructure and their educational needs, emphasizing the vital role of education in their lives. In return, mayors expressed their deep commitment to working together with the community to address these needs, and to enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and equity within the education system.
In each municipality, mayors actively listened to the needs of students and committed to moving towards solutions, reflecting a positive collaboration between local government and students. These dialogues not only addressed immediate concerns but also set the stage for ongoing cooperation to enhance the educational environment in these communities. The support from USAID/Albania and UNICEF Albania played a crucial role in making these dialogues possible and impactful.
Government Representatives Discuss the Integration of a GIS Platform for School Infrastructure Improvement
In December 2023, government representatives from central and local levels gathered in the framework of the Equitable School Infrastructure initiative. They met to discuss the final draft of the technical assessment of 100 schools, carefully selected in cooperation with participating municipalities. The dialogue focused on the critical issues of school infrastructure and the integration of these insights into a Geographic Information System (GIS).
The primary aim of the GIS platform is to make the process of improving school infrastructure more equitable and transparent by improving data processing, promoting informed decision-making, engaging stakeholders, and guaranteeing that resources are allocated where they are needed most. The GIS platform will ensure that decision-makers have access to comprehensive and up-to-date information for schools in their municipalities, reducing the risk of overlooking underserved areas. With the click of a button on a GIS map of Albania they would be able to see accurate information on the school infrastructure, toilet facilities, sport courts and science labs. With accurate data on the condition of schools, government representatives can allocate resources to schools with the greatest needs, ensuring that disadvantaged schools are not left behind. Municipality representatives and the Ministry of Education and Sports lauded the importance of this platform for enhancing decision-making. Moreover, there was an interest in extending this experience to all schools in Albania, with municipalities embracing the GIS platform to make more informed decisions about school infrastructure.
Thus far, the Equitable School Infrastructure initiative has led to remarkable progress in Albania’s ability to bring communities together to discuss education infrastructure and identify the schools with the most pressing needs for rehabilitation or structural improvements. The collaboration between local governments, government representatives, and students, coupled with innovative approaches like the GIS platform, promises a brighter future for Albanian education.
Together with municipalities, USAID/Albania and UNICEF Albania continue to play vital roles in this transformative journey towards quality education and enhanced school infrastructure. The Equitable School Infrastructure initiative is reinforcing the notion that when communities, governments, and students come together with a shared vision, the future of education in Albania is one filled with promise and opportunity. Together, we will ensure that schools with the greatest needs can receive the necessary attention, ensuring that no schools are left behind.
