Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergencies
Emergencies such as disease outbreaks and natural disasters create a wide range of problems experienced at the individual, family, community and societal levels. At every level, emergencies erode normally protective supports, increase the risks of diverse problems and tend to amplify pre-existing problems of social injustice, violence and inequality. An emergency can significantly impact the mental health and psychosocial well-being of a child or adult, with particular groups being at increased risk of experiencing social and/or psychological problems, such as children with disabilities, children without parental care, unaccompanied or separated children, teenage girls, people with pre-existing mental health problems, people that have gone through traumatic events, etc. The training ‘Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergencies’ organized jointly by the WHO and UNICEF offices in Albania, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, aims to equip first-line professionals with a basic understanding of concepts, knowledge and tools to protect and improve people’s mental health and psychosocial well-being in the midst of an emergency. It is designed in 8 separate modules, delivered weekly (every Thursday at 3 pm CET, starting from 28 May 2020), covering the following 8 topics:
An effective response to address mental health and psychosocial well-being of people during and after an emergency requires extensive collaboration among various humanitarian actors, thus the training is addressed to a wide spectrum of professionals. It is not only intended for mental health and psychosocial workers, but also for those professionals engaged in providing social supports relevant to the core humanitarian domains, such as disaster management, human rights, child protection and general protection, general health, education, water and sanitation, food security and nutrition, etc.. The training will be provided via Zoom platform, with simultaneous interpretation Albanian-English. To access the course. You can watch the first module of the training here.
