Situation Overview

On 20 July, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods across three provinces in eastern Afghanistan. The most severe impact was reported in Parun City, Nuristan Province, where extensive flooding caused deaths, injuries, significant damages with disruption of services to the affected communities.

Preliminary reports[1] indicate 23 fatalities and 125 injuries, with additional individuals still missing. The floods destroyed and damaged 92 houses, while also impacting a health clinic, markets, and disrupting local livelihoods.

Critical infrastructure and services sustained damages, including bridges, road sections, flood protection walls, agricultural land and damaged water supply networks, disrupting access to safe drinking water.

Within 24 hours, UNICEF with partners were on the ground, providing immediate lifesaving emergency health services to cover over 600 people including children.
