Since 2012, UNICEF Uganda, its partners and adolescents have been among the first contributors to the development of Adolescent Kit, sharing their experiences, recommendations and strategies for how the Kit's participatory activities and approaches could open opportunities to engage adolescents and youth as peacebuilders.

In 2021 UNICEF Uganda leveraged the Adolescent Kit as a resource to scale up and systematize skill-based learning and opportunities for young people's active community engagement through co-curricular educational programmes throughout the country. Collaborating with Uganda’s Ministry of Education Sports (MoES) and nongovernmental organizations Aflatoun and PEDN, UNICEF adapted the Adolescent Kit to develop a a national Life Skills Toolkit for school-based clubs and clubs for out-of school youth. The Life Skills Toolkit, launched by the Ministry of Education and Sport in November 2022, integrates the Adolescent Kit with the country's national curricula for life skills and school clubs and other global learning resources to create one comprehensive, adolescent-centered skills-building package. The Life Skills Toolkit has thus expanded and systematized competency-based learning and 21st century skill-based learning for adolescents throughout the country, and strengthened the benefits of co-curricular programmes for youth in and beyond schools.

Since it was launched, the Life Skills Toolkit, with its 7 modules and 38 sessions, has been institutionalized as the national curriculum implemented in schools and nonformal education programmes throughout the country. UNICEF Uganda, with its government and NGO partners, is now collaborating with Uganda's national teacher training institutions to integrate modules on the Adolescent Kit and its participatory, arts-based approaches into the curricula of preparatory programmes for all educators to strengthen skill-oriented education for young people both in and beyond classrooms throughout the country.
