When clean water came to Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement — a story of hope and partnership.
Embedded video follows
UNICEF Uganda/2025/RutherfordFor years, families in #Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement walked long distances and queued for hours just to fetch a few litres of water. Children missed school. Mothers spent their days searching for water instead of earning a living. With funding from European Union Humanitarian Aid and implementation by UNICEF in partnership with the Lutheran World Federation, that story has changed. A new solar-powered hybrid water system now delivers safe, reliable water to both refugees and host communities—increasing access from 9 litres to nearly 20 litres per person per day, meeting international humanitarian standards. For children like 12-year-old Stephen, the daily struggle for water has been replaced by laughter, learning, and time to simply be a child. Clean water doesn’t just quench thirst — it restores dignity, health, and hope for over 5500 refugees.
