Eleven-year-old Laul Marol drinks clean water from a UNICEF tap stand funded by the European Union in Cluster I, Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, October 14, 2025. Like Marol, children across the settlement race toward the sound of rushing water, their laughter echoing through the camp as they drink, splash their faces, and wash dust from their legs—simple joys made possible by access to safe, running water.

When clean water came to Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement — a story of hope and partnership.

UNICEF Uganda/2025/Rutherford For years, families in #Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement walked long distances and queued for hours just to fetch a few litres of water. Children missed school. Mothers spent their days searching for water instead of earning a living. With funding from European Union Humanitarian Aid and implementation by UNICEF in partnership with the Lutheran World Federation, that story has changed. A new solar-powered hybrid water system now delivers safe, reliable water to both refugees and host communities—increasing access from 9 litres to nearly 20 litres per person per day, meeting international humanitarian standards. For children like 12-year-old Stephen, the daily struggle for water has been replaced by laughter, learning, and time to simply be a child. Clean water doesn’t just quench thirst — it restores dignity, health, and hope for over 5500 refugees.
