Wafa’a’s and Fadia’s stories are two examples of the strength and resilience found among Yemeni women facing unimaginable challenges. In Yemen’s conflict-affected districts, the burdens these women bear are enormous - from family responsibilities and financial strain to the weight of psychological and physical pressures.

At the age of 28, Fadia found herself facing responsibilities beyond her capacity – an unemployed husband with special needs and five children in need of food and clothing. Her suffering was not limited to financial hardship; she also endured harsh treatment at home, which caused her health to deteriorate day after day under the weight of psychological and physical pressures.

Despite the hardships, Fadia did not lose hope. The turning point came when she learned about the services of the Yemen Women’s Union and UNICEF. She received cash assistance that covered part of her medical treatment costs, allowing her to buy essential medicines and even some clothes for her children.

The support was not only financial, but also psychological. Fadia says: “My mental state changed, and my life began to transform. I feel great relief, and I see our lives moving towards something better.”

With her health improving, she regained her energy and began searching for work to secure a better future for her family. She concludes with a smile: “Today, I live with hope and optimism, and I aspire to be a pillar of support for my children, as they deserve.”

Wafa’a, who lost her husband, faced the challenge of supporting herself and her three children alone. Her journey was marked by years of struggle with difficult living conditions and cancer. But through psychological support sessions and vocational training at the Yemen Women Union’s shelter, Wafa’a rediscovered hope. She regained confidence and returned to her sewing profession, aided by cash assistance that helped her manage health care, provide for her children, and invest in her project.

Wafa’a’s experience highlights how psychological support and economic empowerment can turn despair into opportunity, restoring dignity and opening doors to independent and sustainable work.

Both Wafa’a and Fadia were among the 250 women and children who benefited from the Development of Protection and Psychosocial Support Services project, a vital initiative supported by UNICEF and the World Bank’s Restoring Education and Learning Project (#REAL). This project, led by the Yemen Women Union, targeted 37 districts, aiming to strengthen GBV response systems and build the capacity of frontline service providers - the majority of whom are women. Cornerstones of the project include providing protection cash assistance to survivors, enhancing case management and referral systems, and identifying service gaps through compsrehensive mapping.

Crucially, these efforts integrate accountability, social safeguarding, and community engagement to deliver sustainable, culturally sensitive services for women, girls, and other vulnerable groups.

The stories of Fadia and Wafa’a illuminate the profound impact that coordinated support can have on women’s lives. Through compassion, empowerment, and practical tools, hope shines even in the darkest circumstances — empowering women to become pillars of support for themselves and their families, and to inspire communities for generations to come.
