Highlights

The Yemen Economic and Social Monitor (YESM) is the continuation and evolution of the Yemen Socio-Economic Update, a monthly publication produced over recent years by Yemen’s Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation with UNICEF technical support, reaching 88 issues and covering a wide range of socio-economic developments. Building on that experience, the product has now shifted to a quarterly monitoring format with a stronger analytical and forward-looking focus.

The quarterly Monitor is designed to track key socio-economic indicators and emerging developments, provide regular analysis of critical economic and social issues, and serve as an early-warning and evidence tool for understanding their implications for children and vulnerable populations.

Each issue brings together updates on major economic, social and humanitarian trends, highlighting emerging risks and their potential effects on children, families and essential services, while supporting evidence-informed policy dialogue, planning and programming.

This first issue focuses on social expenditure in Yemen and the development consequences of continued declines in international funding. It examines trends in public and social spending, particularly across education, health and social protection, alongside widening financing gaps and growing humanitarian needs.
