Hanoi, 15 October 2021 - Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is celebrated each year on October 15th to increase global awareness of the importance of handwashing with soap. Handwashing with soap and clean water is among the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent diarrheal diseases and pneumonia, which have claimed the lives of millions of children all over the world. During the COVID-19 pandemic, personal hygienic practices, especially handwashing with soap, is one of the key life-saving behaviours.

In Viet Nam, the pandemic has highlighted the urgent need to ensure everyone can access good hand hygiene while almost 13.6 million people do not have a handwashing facility with soap and clean water at home. An impact evaluation by UNICEF in 2020 showed that while a key defence against COVID-19 is handwashing, access to clean water remains a serious challenge in many parts of the country.

Access to clean water and sanitation facilities at many schools also remains a challenge. Around 5 million students have not got access to clean water and hygienic toilets in accordance with the Ministry of Education and Training’s report in 2020. If children are not able to wash hands with soap or sanitize hands frequently during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new outbreak or other diseases may potentially spread, further worsening the impact of the pandemic.

UNICEF has been collaborating with VIHEMA, NCERWASS, UNILEVER, HappyTap Company, East Meets West Foundation and Save the Children to organize activities in celebration of the GHD 2021 to promote and advocate for daily handwashing with soap (Please see GHD 2021 joint activities). The routine should be frequently practised to protect and enhance all Vietnamese children’s health and development.
