For fifty years, UNICEF and the Government of Viet Nam have worked hand in hand to re-imagine what’s possible for every child. From urgent relief in the post-war years to national reforms today, our partnership has helped millions of children survive, learn, and thrive.
2025 also marks 35 years since Viet Nam ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This moment is an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved and to renew our commitment to the future of every girl and boy.

A partnership growing ever closer
UNICEF was the first UN agency to establish an office in Hanoi after the war. What began with emergency assistance quickly grew into one of UNICEF’s strongest and most enduring partnerships anywhere in the world.
Over time, our work has moved:
- From relief to reconstruction
- From projects to strategic frameworks
- From pilots to reforms that reach every child
At the heart of all this is a shared belief:
Children are “the buds on the branch” - the nation’s future.
Viet Nam then and now
In 1975, many children lacked safe water, nutrition, and healthcare. Too many never reached their fifth birthday, and too many were kept from school.
By 2025, the picture is transformed:

The Convention on the Rights of the Child remains our compass. Together, UNICEF and Viet Nam invite all partners - government, civil society, private sector, international allies, and communities - to join in building a future where every child enjoys every right.
When children are safe, nurtured, and empowered, Viet Nam’s future will be brighter, stronger, and more inclusive - paving the way towards its goals of becoming a high-middle-income country by 2035 and a high-income country by 2045.
