Venezuelan adolescents and young women talk about care work

Within the framework of the XVI Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, young people express themselves on the importance of self-care, recognition of care tasks in the home and the empowerment of adolescent girls.

Voices of adolescents girls and young people

Seven Venezuelan adolescents and young women participated in a series of trainings with other young women from Latin America for the construction of proposals on care issues, within the framework of the XVI Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean that is being held in Mexico from August 12 to 15, 2025.

We share part of what adolescents and young women commented, exercising their right to participation, on the importance of self-care, recognition of care tasks at home, and the empowerment of adolescents for their development.

"It is essential to educate about the importance of self-care and offer resources and strategies for its practice.  

To create and implement an environment of inclusion and respect for diversity and to guarantee the self-care of each individual in the school environment."

"Addressing gender inequality is critical to protecting and empowering adolescent girls, enabling them to develop fully, access opportunities, and make autonomous decisions about their lives."

"A gender approach that does not contradict the cultural values of indigenous women, but rather enhances their role within their communities and guarantees them access to rights, is essential."

"I propose to establish a program that recognizes, records, and compensates for unpaid care work performed by women and adolescents, promoting their emotional well-being, autonomy, and gender equity."
