UNICEF & ZAMIN’s launch “No Barriers” Campaign in Khorezm
Campaign urges communities to be inclusive and end all forms of discrimination against CwD
Urgench, 25 Осtober, 2022 - Today, UNICEF and ZAMIN have launched the No Barriers Campaign in Khorezm region.
The launch itself had voices from сhildren with disabilities and representatives of persons with disabilities and development partners.
The regional launch started with a media orientation session targeted at regional media, which discussed the centrality of the media - through language, media representations and media discourse- in building inclusive communities and discarding negative perceptions, discriminatory practices and stereotypes on Children with Disabilities (CwDs)
While Uzbekistan has registered key milestones such as recently ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) much more needs to be done. The No Barriers campaign seeks to highlight tenets of the CRC and ICRPD that aim to promote the following:
- Ending placement of children in boarding institutions (institutionalization) on the basis of disability and promote children to be brought in a family in the community.
- Abolishing segregated education systems
- Raising awareness in society
- Establishing accessible support services
In Uzbekistan children with disabilities are often schooled in segregated institutions. Children with disabilities accounted for 75 per cent of those in institutional care in 2020 further an estimated 9700 CWDs are out of the school system.
The regional launches are amplifying the conversations on the rights of children and urge communities to end all forms of stigma, discrimination, premiere locally produced PSA on including children across Uzbekistan.
