Alternative groups contribute to ensuring quality and equitable access to preschool education

KHIVA, October 25, 2022 – Today, the opening of alternative preschool groups took place in the Khiva district of Khorezm region. Head of the UNICEF Office in Uzbekistan Munir Mammadzade, Ambassador of Romania to Uzbekistan Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, representatives of regional departments of preschool education, members of mahalla committees, parents and employees of preschool educational organizations attended the ceremony.

One of the key objectives of preschool education system in Uzbekistan is to ensure equal access to quality preschool education. In this regard, UNICEF supported the government in finding various solutions for the provision of such services. Alternative models of preschool education have been developed that are accessible, effective, free of charge and provide quality services to the most vulnerable segments of the population.

The Romanian government has decided to provide financial support to UNICEF initiatives in the field of early childhood education and provided technical assistance to the establishment of two groups in the Khiva region at the request of the Ministry of Preschool Education. Thanks to the financial assistance of the Romanian Embassy, ​​the alternative groups were equipped with children's furniture, teaching and learning materials and toys. Teachers were trained in alternative teaching methods in multi-age groups.

The creation of the alternative groups will provide an opportunity for children from vulnerable and low-income families in the Khiva district to attend a pre-school organization free of charge and be fully prepared for school. An important characteristic of such groups is the involvement of parents and the local community, as well as the provision of more equal opportunities in obtaining preschool education for children from various backgrounds.
