1 April 2023. Five thousand Chromebooks and tablets for primary and secondary school age children are being distributed to children in the newly accessible territories of Kharkiv and Kherson regions of Ukraine. UNICEF together with the Ministry of reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine join forces to ramp up the efforts to provide children with the necessary means to continue obtaining education. The equipment is intended for pupils of most vulnerable categories, including children with disabilities, orphans, children deprived of parental care, children from large families, etc.

“Every child has the right for education and together with our partners we work each day to provide children with all necessary means to obtain education. We believe that to ensure healthy development and future for every child we have to provide all the means for education, communication and a sense of security,” said Murat Sahin, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine.

As of March 2023, approximately 1.8 million children study online exclusively, whereas 1.2 million children study in a blended mode. UNICEF is supporting the Government of Ukraine to ensure access to education for schoolchildren by providing equipment and to teachers and pupils, as well as by creating digital educational centres. This batch of equipment is part of UNICEF’s efforts to ensure the continuity of the educational process.

“Right now, it’s important to pay attention to the education of children, especially in rural areas. Recovery of accessible areas must begin with our small citizens. Contributing to the development of children, we lay the foundation for the future of Ukraine. I thank UNICEF Ukraine team for the support of this project,” highlighted Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereschuk.

Frederik Coene, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Ukraine, said the EU and UNICEF are increasing their joint efforts to ensure access to education for the children of Ukraine. “Despite the difficulties and challenges that children face in Ukraine, it is one of our priorities to ensure education is accessible and the necessary means are in place,” he said. “By contributing this equipment, we ensure the continuity of education, development and a prosperous future of Ukraine.”

Devices were procured and delivered with the support of the European Union and the Republic of Korea.
