National Breastfeeding Week
Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems
Every year from September 1 to 7, families, healthcare professionals, and communities in Turkmenistan celebrate Breastfeeding Week. In 2025, this celebration will align with the theme of World Breastfeeding Week, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” which emphasizes the need for sustained and equitable support systems for breastfeeding mothers worldwide. This week is not only a campaign within the healthcare system but a global movement to invest in the future of children, families, and the planet.
This week is dedicated to protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding. It serves as a platform to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding and to create an enabling environment that supports mothers in successfully breastfeeding their children. National Breastfeeding Week is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of breastfeeding within society and to take steps towards creating a supportive environment for mothers.
Breastfeeding is the foundation of a child’s survival, nutrition, and healthy development. It provides essential nutrients, strengthens the immune system, and creates a strong emotional bond between mother and baby. For women, breastfeeding also lowers the risk of certain diseases and supports recovery after childbirth.
Yet, many mothers face obstacles: lack of support, misinformation, and social pressure. World Breastfeeding Week shines a light on these challenges and helps find solutions — so that every child can have the best possible start in life.
Participation can be individual or collective. Here are several ways to contribute:
- Learn and share information: Learn more about the benefits of breastfeeding and share your knowledge with others around you.
- Support mothers: Assist and encourage breastfeeding women in your family or community.
- Advocate for friendly policies: Promote initiatives and environments that support breastfeeding in workplaces and public spaces.
- Organize events: Conduct workshops, meetings, support groups, and other events related to breastfeeding.
- Use social media: Share facts, stories, and materials using official campaign hashtags.
- The National Breastfeeding Week helps to promote breastfeeding-friendly policies in public and workplace settings.
- Each year focuses on a theme that reveals key aspects of breastfeeding support.
- The campaign has significantly increased global awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding for both babies and mothers.
- The National Breastfeeding Week encourages community participation and the creation of sustainable support systems for breastfeeding mothers.
