Climate action and youth, to strengthen climate resilience and empower children and young people to shape a sustainable future.
UNICEF will support the Government of Turkmenistan to achieve the overall result that by 2030, children and young people are better prepared for climate-related risks, actively contribute to climate action and benefit from more resilient systems, services and communities.
Background:
Climate change increasingly affects the wellbeing, health, education and future opportunities of children and young people. Rising temperatures, water scarcity, land degradation and climate-related hazards place growing pressure on communities and public services. Children are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change because disruptions to health, learning and social services can have lifelong consequences.
Turkmenistan has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. However, child-centred climate action remains at an early stage. Climate and environmental education, disaster risk reduction and resilience-building approaches require further integration across systems and services that affect children and young people.
Young people are important agents of change. Equipped with the right knowledge, skills and opportunities, they can contribute to solutions that address environmental challenges and strengthen community resilience. Investing in children and youth today will help build a greener, safer and more sustainable future for Turkmenistan.
UNICEF's work with partners will focus on two main areas of intervention:

- Supporting integration of climate-related risk considerations across sectors affecting children.
- Strengthening climate-resilient social services and infrastructure.
- Promoting climate-sensitive planning and evidence generation.
- Supporting disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness systems.
- Strengthening climate-related data and analysis for decision-making.
- Supporting child-centred approaches within national climate and development frameworks.
- Promoting climate-resilient schools and essential services.
UNICEF will empower children and young people to participate in climate action and environmental sustainability initiatives.

- Strengthening the Green School Programme and related initiatives.
- Promoting youth leadership and participation in climate action.
- Supporting development of green skills and competencies among young people.
