In the realm of innovative solutions to address global challenges, Team Charify stands out as a beacon of hope, offering a promising remedy to the pervasive heavy metal water pollution crisis. Developed by two STEM-dedicated brilliant high school students - Melis and Naz, Team Charify repurposes waste banana and tangerine peels through hydrothermal carbonization to create a powerful adsorbent that tackles heavy metal contamination in water bodies.
Let’s delve into Charify’s inception, unique features, alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the team's aspirations for a cleaner, sustainable future.
Charify's origin lies in the realization that rapid industrialization, population growth, and resource exploitation have turned clean water into a luxury. Heavy metals, known for their toxic and non-degradable nature, pose threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Charify's founders Melis and Naz recognized the need for an innovative solution and saw the untapped potential in waste banana and tangerine peels, leading to the development of an eco-friendly and effective absorbent.
"Our motivation stems from a profound commitment to combat the heavy metal water pollution crisis and ensure the coexistence of marine life and humanity. Charify aspires to positively influence countless lives by providing accessible clean water, not only for a healthier future but also for limitless generations to come.” noted Charify.
The global heavy metal water pollution crisis is characterized by contamination with toxic elements like lead, mercury, and arsenic, impacting aquatic life and human health. Traditional methods often fall short due to high costs and limited scalability. Charify's hydrothermal carbonization technology, combined with a biodegradable filter, offers a cost-effective and accessible means of pollution control, utilizing waste materials that would otherwise contribute to environmental degradation.
"We understand that at our core ‘we are what we eat’. Through the seamless integration of our filters into various agricultural systems, Charify guarantees the promotion of healthy irrigation practices and the sustainable production of agricultural goods. Our confidence relies upon our experiments, which show that Charify is able to work with 95% removal efficiency for up to three months.” conveys Charify.
Charify's vision aligns seamlessly with three key SDGs: SDG 6 - clean water and sanitation, SDG 12 - responsible consumption and production and SDG 14 - life below water. The team's commitment extends beyond addressing the crisis to promoting responsible waste management, sustainable practices, and equitable access to clean water resources.
Charify embraces sustainability by forming mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers and implementing a circular economy model. The revenue model involves sales, subscription plans, and allocation of funds towards research and development, emphasizing continuous improvement and innovation. Charify's commitment to maintaining customer connections through filter maintenance and repair services ensures long-term impact and financial stability.
Charify has conducted studies on hydrothermal carbonization by emphasizing its potential in wastewater treatment. The team's engagement with mentors, including an agricultural engineer, has further strengthened their solution's practicality. Technology plays a pivotal role, ensuring Charify's accessibility, efficiency, and global applicability, with a simple supply chain involving collaborations with juice factories for waste peel sourcing.
“As Charify, from now on, we seek expert mentorship, access to a comprehensive resource pool, strategic business development guidance, networking opportunities, and exposure to potential investors and collaborators. We believe that the comprehensive support will be pivotal for refining our technology, scaling operations, and effectively commercializing Charify on a global scale.” said Melis and Naz.
Charify's journey exemplifies the power of innovation, determination, and commitment to addressing pressing global challenges. As Melis and Naz embark on a path towards cleaner agriculture and sustainable water solutions, the support and guidance provided by Generation Unlimited play a crucial role in shaping a better, more sustainable future. Charify stands as a testament to the transformative impact that young innovators can have on the world, offering hope and inspiration to others seeking to make a positive change.
