Climate Change Education in Tajikistan

A UNICEF Diagnostic Study of the National School Curriculum

Climate

Highlights

UNICEF Tajikistan presents this briefing note on Climate Change Education in Tajikistan, based on a diagnostic study of the national school curriculum. As one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in Europe and Central Asia, Tajikistan faces increasing environmental risks, from glacier retreat and extreme weather events to water scarcity, that directly affect children’s health, education, and wellbeing, particularly in rural areas.

Recognising the country’s young population and ongoing competency-based education reforms, the study examines how climate change education is currently integrated across formal, TVET, and additional education systems, and identifies opportunities to strengthen the development of knowledge, skills, and values needed for climate resilience.

This diagnostic study analyses key dimensions of climate change education (CCE) within Tajikistan’s education system, including the strength of the enabling policy environment, the extent of CCE integration in formal and additional curricula, and the effectiveness of teaching and learning approaches alongside teacher capacity. It also examines the availability of learning resources and the coordination mechanisms that support curriculum development and delivery.
