New UNICEF Representative for Tajikistan receives accreditation from the Government of Tajikistan

Dushanbe, 6 August 2026 – UNICEF in Tajikistan officially announces the appointment of Ms. Gabrielle Akimova as the new Representative for Tajikistan, who has formally taken up office today following the presentation of credentials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

Prior to her current role, Ms. Akimova was the Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Romania, where she provided strategic leadership for programme delivery, partnerships and organizational transformation.   

Over the years, Ms. Akimova has taken on progressive growing senior leadership positions in Romania, Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. She has experience leading complex development and humanitarian programmes, advancing child rights policy reforms, and strengthening systems for child protection, inclusive education and early childhood development.   

Dr. Akimova has taken office following the successful completion of Mr. Arthur van Diesen’s appointment, who led the UNICEF office in Tajikistan for three years since 2023.
