UNICEF Sudan Humanitarian Situation Report: May 2026

Highlights

• In May, UNICEF reached over 800,000 children with education, but over 8 million remain out of school with the most severe disruptions concentrated in Darfur and conflict-affected Kordofan states.
   
• Over one million children under five were screened for acute malnutrition, contributing to 4.5 million children screened since January 2026. Over 24,400 severely acute malnourished children have been admitted this month for lifesaving treatment.
   
• Multiple disease outbreaks, including cholera, dengue fever, malaria, measles, and hepatitis E, continue to spread amid displacement and poor access to essential services. In response, UNICEF supported 400 women and children with essential primary healthcare, enabled 753,500 people to access safe water, and scaled up hygiene interventions in cholera-affected and high-risk areas.
   
• Despite ongoing scale-up of lifesaving interventions, a 71 per cent HAC funding gap continues to constrain the delivery of critical services to vulnerable children.
