Statement from UNICEF Country Representative, South Sudan on the reported killings in Abiemnhom, Ruweng Adminstrative Area
UNICEF is concerned about the escalation of violence in Abiemnhom, Ruweng Administrative Area. Whilst details are still emerging, local authorities have confirmed that three children were killed and at least 13 are receiving treatment in hospital. Local authorities reported that the death toll has increased to 180, and more than 4,000 people are displaced in different locations, some with very little support or services.
In addition, 600 cartons of therapeutic food were looted. The supplies were recently delivered by UNICEF and intended to treat severely malnourished children. UNICEF is responding with deliveries of emergency health and nutrition supplies, supported by partners on the ground.
UNICEF strongly condemns these actions; children should never be victims of violence or conflict. Humanitarian workers, supplies and assets must be protected. UNICEF continues to call for a cessation of hostilities and a return to peaceful dialogue to resolve differences. The children of South Sudan deserve a safe and secure future where their rights are upheld.
