In the lead up to the African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Heads of States Summit, UNICEF will organize a public virtual debate that pulls together young people from Africa and Europe to share their experiences of climate change, discuss solutions with policy makers and develop recommendations for Heads of States.

Climate change is having a dramatic impact on countries in the Sahel, impacting young people (especially girls) the most. We must act NOW

Maguette Ba, 20, Senegal

The 6th AU-EU Summit will take place on 17-18th February 2022 in Brussels, Belgium. In the run up to the Summit, dialogues, consultations and other fora and events will be organised with African and European stakeholders to help refine the way forward and a common vision for the future.

The public debate organized by UNICEF is part of the EU foresees activities with and for young people, which will culminate in an in-person/virtual hybrid Youth summit on 15th February, whose objective is to feed into the Heads of States declaration.

Building on the joint EU-AU-UNICEF partnership for the “Your Voice, Your Future” Campaign, the “Young people’s voices from the Sahel” original initiative1 and the network of U-Reporters, this debate will be aligned with the core priorities of the AU-EU Summit: climate, education, digitalization, governance, peace & security, with a focus on the Sahel. Climate change will be the main entry point to address the other topics, which are all closely linked to the climate crisis.

It will build upon the successful joint EU- AU-UNICEF partnerships for the “Your Voice, Your Future” Campaign and the Young People’s Voices from the Sahel’s Initiative

This initiative led by UNICEF is promoted by the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA), DG CLIMA and the AUC.

The debate will take place on 14th Feb, 13:00 - 14:30 CET. Young participants from Europe and Africa are working ahead of the debate to share personal experiences, facts and evidence on climate change, and to draw recommendations for policy makers.
