KIGALI, RWANDA – 22 December 2022 | IHS Rwanda, a subsidiary of IHS Towers, a leading owner and operator of shared telecommunications infrastructure, UNICEF, and the National Child Development Agency (NCDA), have launched a new Early Childhood Development (ECD) center in Gicumbi District.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is one of the most cost-effective investments a country can make to build human capital and promote sustainable development. A good foundation in the early years gives the next generation a better start.

The ECD center is part of a collaboration between UNICEF and NCDA, with the financial support of IHS Towers. The center will enhance access to integrated ECD services for children aged 0–6 years and their families.

The project, which includes the establishment of two new ECD centers in the districts of Gicumbi and Nyagatare, will contribute to increased availability and utilization of quality ECD services. The centers will create safe and stimulating environments for children of market and cross-border traders near the Rwandan and Ugandan border. They will improve children’s school-readiness and support the transition to primary schools. Overall, the project will contribute to the Government of Rwanda’s goal of scaling up children’s access to ECD services from the current 24 per cent to 45 per cent by 2024.

The project is supported by Action pour le Development du Peuple (ADEPE).
