UNICEF Statement on the South Cotabato Shooting Incident

UNICEF is deeply saddened and alarmed by the school shooting in South Cotabato. Our thoughts are with the children, families, teachers, school personnel and communities affected by this tragedy.

Children affected by serious violence need timely protection, psychosocial support, and help to return safely to school and community life. We urge the public and media to refrain from sharing images, videos or personal details that could compromise the privacy, dignity or well-being of affected children and families.

The increasing frequency and severity of such incidents underscore the urgent need to prevent violence before it occurs. This includes preventing children’s access to firearms and other lethal weapons, strengthening family and parenting support, promoting children’s mental health and psychosocial well-being, and ensuring safe and inclusive schools.

Violence affecting children rarely has a single cause. Prevention must address the overlapping risks, pressures and unmet needs children may face.

Strong child protection systems — focused on prevention, early identification, coordinated case management and a supported social service workforce — are essential to preventing such tragedies from recurring.

UNICEF remains committed to supporting national and local efforts to create safer learning environments and strengthen child protection systems, so that every child can learn, grow and live without fear.
